Why do dentists charge so much?

MY partner has just registered at a dentist in Stretford, we had to pay £40 to register and she had a five minute exam!

Some work is needed and all was put into the system, she has had two x rays, she needs a few fillings repairing, and also she is booked for a clean up, yet the dentist complimented her on her clean teeth and mouth so why a clean up!

We went into reception and the receptionist gave her her plan, not including the £40 already tendered the rest of the treatment comes to £254.

My God, is this profession licence to print money or what.

My partner only earns two times that amount per month. I am amazed that dentists are allowed to make such extortionate charges. A total of as good as damn it £300 for what will be less than an hour’s treatment including the initial consultation. Is it not time that these prices were regulated, I can understand why some people will take a pair of pliers to their own teeth and pull them out.

Dental insurance is more costly than insuring my car, what on earth is it all coming to. Smokers moan at prices of £200 and £300 pounds to stop smoking with hypnotherapy, and they will recover the fees within a month, does no one complain to the regulating body about fees charged by dentist in private practice?

Maybe it is time people started making it known these fees are too much.

I know what you mean. I joined a dentist in Altrincham. But when I got my plan showing what work needed doing, it was jst short of a grand!!! It was only a efw white fillings and a crown!! I havent had the crown yet, seeing as it costs £395 !!!! scandelous!

The answer to your question is "because they can" it seems there are no governing bodies to oversee the extortionate amounts charged. They use the same tools for working on private patients as they do for working on nhs patients and more often than not, they use the same compounds, cements etc also. They are a law unto themselves and i would suggest shopping around. As i informed my dentist regarding some treatment needed the other day i wouldnt spend hundreds of pounds on a pair of shoes without shopping around first!my dentist then rang me on the way home with a "better price" MMM the mind boggles !

It never ceases to amaze me how many people whine on about dental costs yet will no doubt be capable of spending money on sweets, cakes, biscuits and soft drinks every week.
The sooner people realise that you can't have everything in life for free the better. Why has she only just registered with a dentist, has she not been going every 6 months in the past? That would explain why her initial plan requires so much work! Her teeth may be clean but that doesn't mean they're actually healthy, perhaps the dentist was just being pleasant and wanting to pay her a compliment?
Think about the stuff you waste money on, stop wasting it, and you'll soon have the money to spend on your health, be it dental or otherwise.
