THE reader’s letter 'we don't want any more bins' in the July 24 issue will have struck a chord with many if not most residents.
In the July issue of Trafford Today, the council’s own publication, under the title 'New bins for all' they claim that popular demand requires an enhanced re-cycling and waste service and that residents were consulted in January who voted overwhelmingly to keep weekly collections. I'm sure that popular demand would be for less not more demands placed on residents and I don't know anyone who was consulted in January.
Why is it that when more has to be done the onus is passed to residents? With four wheely bins to contend with where are people going to keep them? Some terrace houses have no front garden and only a small back yard, and what about multiple occupancy rented flats? All this is under the logo "Improving your neighbourhood". In most cases residents will put their bins out neatly outside their homes but when the collection has been made it looks as if a tornado has struck with bins all over the place. Why are they in such an all-fired hurry? and why aren't the council monitoring this?
Where residents go out to work this is the state for most of the day sometimes blocking pavements and access.
The biggest single issue in reducing waste for landfill is plastic in all its various forms. As far as I am aware there is only one item that is collected - plastic bottles. All the rest goes in general waste. Residents cannot do much about that until councils and industry provide the means to enable us to re-cycle so much more. I'm sure most residents are only too willing to re-cycle given the means. Name and address supplied
