Caught out by car park system

I too have fallen victim to the parking system at Tesco Altrincham. Monday 14th July I entered the car park at 12.10pm. I returned after about an hour and a half to find I had received a ticket which had been issued 30 minutes after my arrival.

I spoke to an attendant dressed like a pseudo policeman. He assured me that each car is carefully photographed upon entry and this would be considered as part of the appeal. Having appealed, I received a letter of response from a company called Central Ticketing in Birmingham.

Guess what? My appeal had been unsuccessful as they claimed I been parked at Tescos for 4 and a half hours. The letter was also threatening in tone, stating that I had 10 days to pay or the case would be passed to debt recovery agents, which would result in and increase from £40 to £135, plus further administration costs.

Obviously the psychology here is to pay early and have done with the matter. I am tempted to pay and put it down to experience but what if you're a pensioner or on benefits? It could be a real struggle to pay.

The technology at Tesco’s Altrincham is clearly not working properly.

This situation is wrong and ordinary people are being bullied by a faceless organisation using malfuntioning technology to boost its own profits. Tescos must also take responsibility for this situation for allowing this company to operate on its property.

If you do not believe they have evidence (and this is real evidence we're talking about, not just the say-so of a sensor over your car) that your car was in the bay for the entire 4 1/2 hours; do not pay. There is nothing the company can do except allow you to recover more costs from them when you win if it does go so far as court. It won't they will back down when they realise they cannot win.

Once you pay up, it will be next to impossible to get your money back.

Tescos should take some responsibility here; as it's their own customers who are being hounded by staff employed at their bequest on their land following their parking regulations.

Martin,

The same thing happened to my wife in June.

Firstly, DO NOT PAY ANYTHING.

Apeals to Central Ticketing do not work, we tried that method too!!!

Go into Tesco and ask to see Pete Johnson. He is onw of the customer services manager and is very efficient.

He informed us that Tesco were having lots of problems with the sensors (as a quick search around the letters pages will reveal).

He also cancelled the ticket for us (gave us proof in writing too in case of any further action) and gave us a £20 giftcard for our troubles.

A very helpful man who was sympathetic to people being caught out by these dodgy sensors.

Let us know how you get on.

Good luck!

Anth.
