FROM SMALL ACORNS

The name Timperley comes from ‘Timber Lea’, which means ‘clearing in a wood’.

Until the early 1800s it was the centre of a farming community and was a ‘township’ in the parish of Bowdon.

Gradually it became a residential area for Manchester industrialists, who moved out of the city.

It remained predominantly rural, though, until the 1930s, when large scale house building got underway.

Now, although mostly urban, it retains an old-fashioned community atmosphere that is distinct from neighbouring Altrincham. Its shopping area is still aptly called the Village.

The Village is the type of traditional shopping centre that many communities are bemoaning the loss of. It boasts traditional, independent shops providing a friendly service alongside three supermarkets.

AMENITIES

Situated on Stockport Road is Timperley Library, which includes a children's library, exhibition area and meeting room for hire.

The libraries activities include a storytime for under 5s every Monday at 2.30pm; a readers’ group that meets every month; and a silver surfers' day for over-50s is held on the last Friday of each month.

There are two free car parks in the village - on Thorley Lane and Baker Street, off Stockport Road, at the rear of the library.

There are two recycling centres - located in the library car park and Beech Avenue Playing Fields, Langham Grove.

The Village boasts the state of the art Larkhill Community Centre, which was built in the late 90s thanks to Lottery funding ands the base for a host of community groups.

WHO’S IN CHARGE?

Three council wards cover the area.

One is Village ward, which has three Liberal Democrat councillors - Ray Bowker, Hazel Bowker and Tony Fishwick. It has a population of 9,747.

The second is Timperley ward, which is represented by two Conservative councillors, Matt Colledge and Ken Bullman, and a Liberal Democrat, Neil Taylor. Its population is 10,666.

Part of Broadheath ward spreads to the neighbouring area of Timperley. Its councillors are Brenda Houraghan, James Pearson and Keneith Weston, all Conservative.
Altrincham North Neighbourhood Forum represents Village, Timperley and Broadheath wards.

Meetings are held every two months. They start at 6pm with an open forum until 7pm. This is a drop-in session where residents can meet individually with councillors, council officers, the police and other agencies to raise issues of concern. A discussion forum follows between 7pm and 8pm. The chairman is Councillor James Pearson.
