Urmston come up short

2:55pm Tuesday 13th May 2008

Hyde 142-8

Urmston 140URMSTON travelled to Hyde last Saturday looking to add to their first win the week before, but just came up short in an exciting game that they probably should have won.

Hyde won the toss and elected to field first, and when Chris Watson was bowled with the second ball of the day, and skipper Adam Landry soon followed with just 4 to his name, it looked a good decision with the visitors rocking at 8-2.

Rebuilding began between Nick Allen and former Yorkshire regular Ish Dawood, and with some aggressive and sometimes audacious batting, they added 51 for the third wicket, before Allen was caught at second slip off the bowling of the lively Rob Woolley for 20.

Dawood then followed, again caught by Duffy, off Young, for an entertaining 36, but again not going on to that big score that is desparately needed by a batting line-up lacking in confidence at the moment.

The introduction of Danny Woods, making his seasonal debut after a trial with one of the counties, sent Urmston's remaining batsmen in to a tailspin.

He removed Craig Grindley for 12, Craig Allison for 23, James Williams for 16, Neil Lomax without scoring and Rob Tootell for three, to claim his five for, and when Tom Young cleaned up Ian Grindley for nine, Urmston's innings had closed on 140 all out.

All was not lost however, as moisture in the wicket gave the Urmston seamers much hope, and this proved to be the case, as the Hyde top order was ripped out by the veterans Kurt Edginton and Rob Tootell.

Chris Pilkington was first to go for 0 caught behind off Edginton, quickly followed by Aussie Josh Farmer LBW for one off the slightly erratic Craig Allison.

Cheshire man James Duffy started with a four and a six to show his intent but a superb caught and bowled by Edginton sent him back to the pavilion.

Chris Tipper, fresh from an appearance in the week for Lancashire's second XI, then followed, trapped LBW off Tootell for four, and Michael Morris suffered the same fate dismissed for 10.

When Tootell grabbed his third wicket, clean bowling Peacock for four, Hyde were reeling at 49-6.

The key moment of the match was the dropping of Rob Brierley at second slip off Tootell when he was in single figures, but he used his escape wisely, then adding 55 for the seventh wicket with Danny Berry to claw Hyde back in to the game.

Edginton grabbed two more wickets however, bowling Brierley for 35 and Rob Woolley for 14, to swing the game back in Urmston's favour, but Berry was batting superbly, and took Hyde to victory reaching 57 not out, supported by Tom Young on five, to see Hyde home by a two-wicket margin.

Pick of the Urmston bowling was Kurt Edginton with 4-45 in a marathon 21 overs, and Rob Tootell with 3-18 in nine overs.
