WHILE most of Trafford’s amateur actors have hung up their wigs and packed away their make-up for the summer, one society is determined to keep the house lights burning as ‘summer’ takes hold.

Later this week Sale and Altrincham Musical Theatre will perform Music From The Movies, a mouth watering selection box of songs immortalised on the big screen.

Numbers from classic movie musicals like Grease and Carousel meet material from the timeless Disney children’s films. Gill Bate, the company’s press officer, says the Disney section will give SAMT’s younger members the chance to shine.

“We’ve got a great team of kids and they’re in quite a few of the numbers, but particularly the Disney section which goes right up to the latest craze of High School Musical,” she says.

Gill is confident that the society’s latest compilation show has something to please everybody’s musical palate and says the programme even includes songs from movies that aren’t straightforward musicals.

“You’ve got songs from movies like Flashdance and Footloose and these are very energetic dance numbers, as you can probably imagine,” says Gill.

This is the first time SAMT has produced a show with an exclusively movie theme and Gill thinks the programme will help the group reach a different kind of audience and, very possibly, a younger audience.

“Maybe it’ll be a way of whetting their appetite and creating a whole new audience for us,” she adds. Rick Bowen * Sale and Altrincham Musical Theatre presents Music From The Movies at the Club Theatre, Oxford Road, Altrincham, from July 16-19 at 7.30pm.
