Somewhat sceptical about God

12:23pm Friday 25th July 2008

YOUR headline 'Power of a Mother’s Prayer'(SAM 24 July) suggests that you accept her view that her son’s recovery from an illness that is commonly fatal was actually due to divine intervention. As an atheist, I am somewhat sceptical about that idea (reputable studies of the power of prayer have not shown positive results, although there is plenty of evidence that a belief in one’s recovery can help illnesses). However, for those readers who believe in prayer, it would be helpful to know which god she was praying to. Her name suggests that it might be the Moslem one, so perhaps those who pray to other gods should redirect their efforts!

A brave new world surrounded by stinking rubbish

9:00am Friday 25th July 2008

IT was a little concerning to read your recent article on Trafford's plan to increase recycling as it seems that we are to have a plethora of wheelie bins.

Caught out by car park system

12:10pm Thursday 24th July 2008

I too have fallen victim to the parking system at Tesco Altrincham. Monday 14th July I entered the car park at 12.10pm. I returned after about an hour and a half to find I had received a ticket which had been issued 30 minutes after my arrival.

TRAFFORD Centre owners Peel Holdings have submitted plans for a 16-storey hotel next to junction 9 of the M60 motorway.

Not the brightest star

12:00pm Wednesday 23rd July 2008

In last week’s Messenger it was stated that the Altair development was named after the brightest star in the northern skies. I would just like to inform you that Altair, the brightest star in the constellation of Aquila, is not the brightest star in the sky. Sirius, at magnitude minus 1.5, is easily the brightest star in the northern winter sky.

We don't want any more bins

12:00pm Wednesday 23rd July 2008

So Jonathan Coupe (Executive Member for Trafford Council's Waste and Recycling) is "really quite excited about it". In all the excitement it seems both he and Gerry Taylor forgot about the problem they would impose on householders; the small matter of where are we going to find space to park these extra bins and let's face it they are something of an eyesore. This seems to be yet another of those half-baked career development ideas that have not been thought through. I suggest they bin this one - and look for another solution - rather than taking the easy way out by putting the onus on the council tax payers. We don't want any more bins.

Big thank you

12:04pm Tuesday 22nd July 2008

I WOULD like to say a big thank you to the lady who found my keys on Broad Road and handed them in to Sale police station on Monday afternoon, if you could contact me I would like to thank you in person.

Hospital tiles fiasco

11:59am Tuesday 22nd July 2008

I REFER to your article on Alty.General. There is little cause to be enthusiastic about this project. I use the example of the Trafford General main corridor NEW tiling, which was recently introduced.

Reassuring that people still care

11:20am Friday 18th July 2008

ON JULY 11 my wife tripped over a badly maintained pavement on Park Road, Urmston, resulting in cuts and severe bruising to the face, a broken tooth and damage to her mouth.

Congestion charge is a tax for road users

4:00pm Thursday 17th July 2008
